Fleet Safety: How PTP Transport Goes Above and Beyond to Provide and Develop a Culture of Safety
Truck drivers have a lot of responsibilities while on the road. Besides working long hours transporting freight from location to location, they are also indebted to businesses for timely turnaround times. Perhaps, the most important responsibility truck drivers carry, above delivery deadlines, is safe driving and safely delivering goods.
Practicing fleet safety not only helps to protect our drivers, but it also helps reduce costs, claim payouts and insurance premiums. Here’s why and how PTP prioritizes safety in our fleet.
How Does PTP Transport Incorporate Fleet Safety into Our Driver Standards?
When it comes to driver safety, we have protocols in place to ensure that our drivers feel safe when they’re on the road doing their jobs. These safety protocols include preventative maintenance with our partner Penske, weekly driver-focused checks and driver safety incentives. We want our drivers to know, above all, that they’re operating a safe piece of equipment and that all equipment has been checked, maintained and is up to driver safety standards.
Protocol #1: Preventative Maintenance with Our Partner Penske
Preventative maintenance is one of the most important parts of successful fleet management. When equipment isn’t working in optimal condition, it presents many risks, puts workers in danger and can lead to legal repercussions. PTP works one-on-one with Penske to regularly maintain and protect our equipment. In fact, PTP has a Penske shop located in our yard. This guarantees that our vehicles are running efficiently and are operating safely. PTP’s priority is ensuring that our trucks and drivers are ready for the long haul. Part of what makes our maintenance protocol different is that we partner with Penske to prevent accidents before they occur.
In addition, Penske offers 24-hour roadside assistance for any driver, in any of our trucks, at any time. This means, our drivers are taken care of night and day when on the road doing their jobs. As an added precaution, PTP also has other reputable trucking companies ready to call and send to aid our drivers, as needed. These measures ensure that despite all our checks and maintenance measures, our drivers are always just a call away from getting the assistance they may need on the road.
Protocol #2: Weekly Checks
While our maintenance contract with Penske is one of the most important parts about our fleet safety measures, our mechanics also perform weekly maintenance checks in the yard. This ensures that there are no safety issues or faulty equipment. To deliver products in a safe manner, we practice weekly preventative maintenance checks––like a routine oil change––where we check brake lights, tires and windshields to ensure our trucks are running at optimal status.
Protocol #3: It Pays to Drive Safe
While preventative, routine checks are one of the most important ways we keep our fleet safe, safety incentive plans are another way we integrate safety into our trucking practices. Through positive reinforcement like our safety performance bonus, we create an environment that promotes safer roadways. To qualify, drivers must maintain a record of no accidents or violations for 6 months.
