PTP Recognizes Emotional Wellness Month
The Role of a Truck Driver
The job of a truck driver is an extremely unique role in American society. Drivers are not only responsible for their cargo arriving within a tight deadline, but they also have a greater sense of responsibility for the lives of those they share a road with. It is already a notable challenge to safely maneuver and operate an 18-wheeler on a crowded interstate, not to mention the additional stress that comes with extended hours away from family, late nights spent driving and a general feeling of isolation.
The day-to-day, on the job, life of a trucker is not an easy one, which is why emotional wellness is so important. This month, PTP Transport is promoting mental well-being in alliance with the National Center for Emotional Wellness, which has recognized October as Emotional Wellness Month since 2004. Learning how to stay in a positive mindset, even if feeling isolated on the road, is a skillset many truck drivers are learning to utilize.
Create and Maintain a Routine
Many truck drivers will tell you that one of the hardest parts of the job is the loneliness that can occur on the road. Missing out on valuable time with friends, family and loved ones can bring feelings of isolation and separation. Taking the time to strengthen your relationships while on the road is critical for keeping a sound mind. Consistently making time on a regular basis to speak with loved ones can help you not only maintain and strengthen relationships while away, but help you feel more involved in both their lives and your own. Another beneficial step to a trucker’s daily routine is implementing an exercise plan. Exercising does not have to mean going to the gym for long hours but can instead be a short run or jog. Keeping your body active and your mind occupied by going on a simple walk is an easy way to work out if no exercise equipment is available to you on the road.
Foster Community with Fellow Truck Drivers
As previously mentioned, keeping in touch with family, friends and loved ones on a regular basis is extremely beneficial for keeping a happy and sound mind. Additionally, engaging with fellow truck drivers holds many rewarding benefits. Connecting with other truckers through basic mediums like Facebook groups allows for easy connections to coworkers in the field.
Think of Yourself
Connecting with people is extremely important for emotional wellness, but late at night after a long day driving when phone calls and human interaction seem out of the question, having a hobby can be the ultimate boredom combatant. Something as simple as keeping a journal, reading a book or watching a television show can keep your mind engaged. Similarly, listening to podcasts or music you’ve never heard keeps your mind sharp and occupied.
Keep on Rollin’
There is no other job like truck driving. A unique blend of driving skills and safety precautions accompanied by the economic importance of the position puts the driver under immense stress. At PTP, we are thankful for our drivers who accept and excel in the challenges of this position.
