Truck Parking Challenges and the PTP Advantage
Truck Parking Challenges and the PTP Advantage
Truck parking is one of the top issues both fleets and drivers face. According to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), limited safe truck parking is an ongoing problem due to limited infrastructure, hours-of-service (HOS) changes and more.
Why Truck Parking is a Problem in the U.S.
Did you know there is only one parking space available for every 11 drivers on the road? The parking shortage has led to drivers resorting to parking on an exit ramp or the sides of roadways, creating a serious safety hazard. According to Doug Marcello, a trucking and commercial transportation attorney, most of the accident cases he works with are caused when a driver parked on the side of the highway tries to re-enter traffic. Beyond being a safety concern, this also poses legal issues, as parking along certain highways is strictly prohibited.
The Effects of the Parking Shortage on Truck Drivers
For truck drivers, especially long-haul drivers, difficulties finding parking are a constant source of stress. Instead of just focusing on the road, they must think ahead to where they are going to park when their HOS runs out. The stress on drivers to find parking, paired with the overall stress of the job and lifestyle, can lead to severe health issues.
PTP Drivers Face Less Parking Uncertainty
PTP Transport acknowledges the nationwide parking shortage and the challenges it creates for the trucking industry. Due to the nature of our drivers’ schedules, the need for long-term parking is reduced because PTP drivers are typically home two to three times per week. However, if a PTP driver needs to reserve parking, they can add the costs to their fuel card or be reimbursed when receipts are presented. This ensures our company drivers have access to paid parking whenever necessary.
