Brake Safety Week 2024 Prep – How To Guide
Brake Safety Week 2024 begins August 25th-31st. This event, organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), focuses on inspecting the brake systems of commercial motor vehicles across North America. The goal is to identify and address brake-related violations, which are the leading cause of out-of-service vehicle violations during roadside inspections.
During this week, inspectors will be particularly attentive to the condition of brake linings and pads. They will look for issues including excessive wear, cracks and any signs of contamination. In some areas, performance-based brake testers (PBBTs) will be used to assess the braking efficiency of vehicles, offering a more precise measurement of brake performance.
How can you prepare for Brake Safety Week?
1. Conduct Thorough Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections
Inspect Brake Linings and Pads: Drivers should closely examine the visible portions of brake linings and pads for excessive wear, cracks or other damage. Look for any grooves caused by rivet contact.
2. Review Preventive Maintenance Logs and Discuss
Routine Checks: Ensure that vehicles undergo regular preventive maintenance. This includes checking the entire brake system—such as the condition of the drums, rotors and other critical components—to ensure they meet safety standards.
4. Educate Yourself on Common Issues
Brake Adjustment and Performance: Educate yourself on the importance of proper brake adjustment and how to recognize signs of brake performance issues, such as pulling to one side when braking or unusual noises.
Why Does Brake Safety Week Exist?
According to last year’s CVSA International Roadcheck results, brake-system violations were the top vehicle violations, comprising 25.2% of all vehicle out-of-service violations during that three-day data snapshot of roadside inspections. Brake Safety Week serves as part of a broader effort to enhance road safety by ensuring that commercial motor vehicles have properly functioning braking systems and are providing safe travel throughout North America.
