Stay Safe on The Road This Winter
Stay Safe on The Road This Winter
When winter weather occurs, it can cause safety hazards for truck drivers. Colder temperatures can cause icy roads that make it difficult for drivers to transport loads safely and efficiently. PTP has developed a list of tips for drivers to help stay safe on the roads this winter.
7 Winter Weather Driving Tips for Truckers
- Slow Down
Driving slower gives you more time to react in the event of hydroplaning. Avoid winter accidents by watching your speed closely.
- Brake Slowly
Braking slowly is just as important as driving slowly. During winter, accelerate and brake slowly to avoid unnecessary hydroplaning and accidents.
- Carry Proper Supplies
Having cold weather essentials like gloves, extra clothing layers, snow scrapers and a bag of sand or salt can help in the event of an emergency.
- Keep a Firm Grip on the Wheel
You can maintain control if you grip the wheel firmly and always keep both hands on the wheel. This helps drivers when guiding the truck through ice and snow.
- Watch Out for Bridges
Elevated surfaces like bridges and highway overpasses freeze faster than non-elevated roads like interstates. These surfaces also may not be salted and require more caution when crossing.
- Avoid Black Ice
Black Ice is a layer of transparent ice that makes the road look wet. An easy way for drivers to spot black ice is to take note of when the spray from other vehicles stops. You can also watch for frost on your truck antennae and mirrors.
- Allow Safe Space
Keeping space between your truck and other vehicles is always important but becomes imperative in the winter. Drivers should increase their following distance to allow enough space to stop and maneuver in unexpected traffic situations.
While these tips can be helpful for winter weather, it is important for drivers to know their limits. If there is too much ice and snow on the road, a cautious driver will wait until it is safe to continue. At PTP Transport, we operate with a culture of safety.
